Juvéderm -The Latest Wrinkle Filler

By Nathan Newman, MD

Over recent years, hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Captique, and Hylaform have replaced collagen injections to be the standard compound for filling in wrinkles.  Juvéderm is the latest FDA approved hyaluronic acid filler that will be marketed in the USA starting January of 2007.  As the latest advancement in fillers, Juvéderm yields more elegant results and is longer lasting.  Juvéderm supplements your skin’s age-depleted hyaluronic acid to plump-up the lip or to raise the skin and correct wrinkle and depressions on the face and body.

Benefits Of Juvéderm
Juvéderm is a long-lasting viscoelastic colorless clear gel, obtained by bacterial fermentation therefore it is of non-animal origin and is highly biocompatible.  It does not require any prior testing as risk for allergic reaction is very low.  In addition, it is much smoother than the other hyaluronic acid fillers and is less likely to bead or become lumpy.  The benefits of Juvéderm usually last six to nine months, but the duration may be longer or shorter depending on skin type, the area treated, the volume injected and the strength and frequency of skin and muscle movement.  Juvéderm will be supplies in two different forms to allow optimal treatment from fine lines and deep folds.  At times a combination of different versions may be used to layer the filling sculpting an area by adding volume deeper and filling in the wrinkles more superficially.
Areas Treated With Juvéderm

Side Effects

Occasional cases of lumpiness, sometimes accompanied by redness, may occur within a few days but smoothes out in few weeks. Mild bruising and skin discoloration at the injection site may occur that resolves by itself.
Cost
The cost for a Juvéderm treatment is dependant on the amount of filling material that will be needed to correct the desired area.  A pre-filled syringe will cost between $600 to $800.
