The Search For The Perfect Filler
For decades surgeons have tried to augment, rejuvenate, accentuate and restructure the face and the body using a variety of filling materials. Despite well-publicized complications, some of these fillers remain in frequent use because we have not found more suitable fillers. To this day, the quest for the best filling material has not been able to develop anything better than our own natural fat. Fat grafting techniques have been modified and improved over the years. Today, fat grafting is one of the safest, most natural and cost-effective cosmetic procedures done in the world. The final outcome of the procedure depends on the technique and the experience of the cosmetic surgeon.

What Is Fat Grafting?
Fat Grafting is also referred to as fat transfer, autologous fat transplantation, micro-lipoinjection, and liposculpture. Fat grafting is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure in which fat cells are meticulously harvested from one part of the body and transplanted into another area of the body.

How Is Fat Grafting Done?
Fat can be taken from any part of the body and injected into another part of the body. The procedure can be carried out under local anesthesia or if desired with sedation. There is no need to undergo general anesthesia with its’ associated risks and extra cost. A blunt cannula is used, minimizing damage to tissues, to collect the fat into a syringe. A closed system, where the fat is not exposed to air or touched in the process, is preferred in order to minimize the risk of contamination and infection. The fluid is then separated from the fat and the fat is injected into the desired area using a blunt needle until the desired outcome is achieved.

Fat & Aging
As we age the fat cells in the face and hands shrink, and collagen and elastic fibers break down, resulting in wrinkles and saggy skin.  Thus the cheeks appear smaller, the bags under the eyes become more prominent, jowls appear, the brow and upper eyelid skin droops. A saggy, tired, hollow, or even skeletal appearance, results due to fat shrinkage. Fat grafting replenishes the lost fat volume in these areas restoring the fullness associated with a natural healthy and youthful look.

Other benefits include the fact that there is almost an endless supply of fat in most people. The harvested can be frozen and stored for future treatments. Fat grafting maybe carried out as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other procedures. In addition, the treated areas do not feel fatter, but unlike other fillers, the grafted fat integrates with the surrounding tissues. Even the most dramatic changes in size or structure are so natural in appearance and texture that without memories or photographs with which to compare, they are undetectable.
Uses Of Fat Grafting
Fat grafting can be used safely and successfully to rejuvenate, re-sculpt, accentuate, augment, and contour, as well as correct deformities or irregularities on all areas the face and body. Most common areas treated include:
  Face
Laugh lines, lips, corners of the mouth, cheek areas, temple areas, forehead, eye brows, frown lines, chin, jowls, jaw line
  Eyes
Dark circles under eyes, droopy eye lids, correction of "hollow" eyes, correction after aggressive removal of eye fat pads from eyelid tuck surgery
Acne scars and scars on the body
Depressions from acne, injury, disease or surgery
  Hands
Reverse thinning & skeletalization of aging hands
  Buttocks
  Depressions from liposuction

What To Expect After The Treatment
Immediately after the treatment there is mild swelling and some redness. Usually there is no bruising in the grafted area. There is little to no discomfort in the grafted area and mild soreness in the donor area that resolves within 2 weeks. There is a little scab from the needle that goes away in a couple of days. The swelling goes down in 1 to 6 days in the grafted area. Most patients do not require pain medications and are able to resume their normal routine the very next day.
How Long Do Fat Grafts Last?
Once the grafted fat has a blood supply, it becomes part of the living tissue permanently. Studies have shown that fat grafting done by an experienced cosmetic surgeon who used the advanced techniques can achieve between 30% to 80% permanent correction with in 3 treatment sessions.
